The Old State House

My teacher Ms.Miller handed out a paper about a civil war thing at the Old State House. My best friend Eric and I were very interested so we decided to go together. He picked me up at 9:00 and we went up to Hartford. The first session was with a civil war soldier. I asked if there were women soldiers and he said there were many. I only heard of women doctors. Then we went to a table to make our regiment badge and I made the 20th Maine. After the soldier taught us how to load a gun and he gave us a fitness test which I passed. Then we went to listen to a lady talk about the Election of 1863. I would have voted for William Buckingham not Thomas Seymore ( who did not support free blacks and agreed with the south's succession from the Union. We also got to read real letters sent by soldiers who wrote about their thoughts on the candidates running for governor. Finally we went to a speech that Thomas Seymore gave. When the speech was done we voted and, of course, Buckingham won.

The Parade

Yesterday I went to a Civil War parade at CCSU. First there were veterans, some Indian girls, and then some Indian army men. After that the best part came, soldiers! First moderns, and men with red uniforns, then union men, and last (of course) confederates. The union divisions stood in front of me. After the speaking was over I went to the exhibit with a lot of cool info. and got a union hat, a book, and a picture of a union division on the Waterbury green.

The Day Lincoln Was Shot

Lincoln was shot just three days after the Civil War ended by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln was watching a play called My American Cousin, he had no guard outside of his box so Booth walked right in, took out his pistol, and fired. The bullet pierced Lincoln's brian. Booth was also armed with a knife so when Lincoln's friend (also in the box) jumped at Booth he just stabed right through his hand. When he jumped out of the box onto the stage he sprained his ankle. It was 12 days before union calvery caught Booth. He was shot in the left side of the neck and died a couple of hours later. For the south he was a hero but for the north he will be remembered  as the "Man Who Killed Lincoln".

Brady & Lincoln

This is a picture of Abraham Lincoln by Mathew Brady. It's the one that is seen on the five doller bill. I found these facts on Wikipedia:
Brady also photographed Abraham Lincoln on many occasions. His Lincoln photographs have been used for the $5 dollar bill and the Lincoln penny. One of his Lincoln photos was also used by the National Bank Note Company as a model for the engraving on the 90c Lincoln Postage issue of 1869.
Brady found a friend in Lincoln and Lincoln found a friend in Brady. Sadly though I also found this on Wikipedia:
Mathew Brady died penniless in the charity ward of Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, at five o'clock, on January 15, 1896, from complications following a streetcar accident.

Lincoln

I'm related to someone named Jesse W. Weik. This is something I found on Wikipedia:
Jesse William Weik (August 23, 1857 – August 18, 1930), was a collaborator with William Herndon in writing the first authoritative biography of Abraham Lincoln, published in 1889.
When Herndon died Jesse made his own copy called:  Abraham Lincoln: The True Story of a Great Life. I've tried to find the book but I can't!! I' m pretty mad about that.

Civil War

The Civil War really turned the tables for many people. Thousands of men left their homes, many just to find their end. But think about if all those men didn't leave, then which side would have won? And I always wonder what would life be like if the confderates won? Forget about Disney World! Tell me what you think about that by leaving me a comment. I myself think life would be bad!

April 12, 1861

Today is 4/12/1861. The day the Civil War started. There's reenactments all over the place, but I really want to go to the one at Fort Sumnter. I'm the biggist Civil War fan ever but I can't go to any reenactments. This sucks!!! Any way the reason the Civil War -150 years ago- started is because 11 southern states wanted to sucede from the union. The union didn't want them to so the south fired cannons onto Fort Sumnter.
